“Black Greek-letter organization leads the conversation regarding the impact of domestic violence on our youth.”

On Tuesday, October 18, 2022 the Fatherhood Initiatives and Mentoring Committee (FIMC) – (Brother Michael Frazier) of the Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, led by Brother Conrado B. Morgan (District Representative) partnered with other community members in hosting a virtual conversation on the impact of domestic violence on youth.

The event titled “Truth and Trauma: A Discussion on the Impact of Domestic Violence on Youth,” featured Dr. Richard Mason, Davy Smith III, Patrick Garland Ed.S, and Makya Little. Dr. Mason is actively involved in the Hampton Roads Community of Virginia. He served as a “Child and Adolescent Expert” providing insight to the kids on WAVY TV 10’s “Kid Talk” Show. Mr. Davy Smith, III, Executive Director of Action In Motion, Inc., also serves as Vice Chairman of the Third District’s Fatherhood Initiative & Mentoring program. Smith agreed to participate on the panel stating, “As a child, I witnessed my mom being abused. I feel my story of survival will help others.” Mr. Patrick M. Garland, Ed.D., who engages with youth on a regular basis as an Educator in Falls Church quoted Booker T. Washington in saying, “The status that one achieves in life is not as great as the obstacles they have overcome while trying to succeed.’”

The conversation was moderated by a domestic violence survivor and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Makya Little. Earlier this year, Little championed legislation in the General Assembly that received support from advocates for women’s rights.
