Honoring the Legacy of Brother Dr. Vernon Eugene Johnson (Part II)

Through rigorous research into the archives of the Mighty Third District historical documents, the History & Archives Committee has uncovered remarkable milestones in the life and service of Brother Dr. Vernon Eugene Johnson. These historical records reveal a lifelong commitment to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., illustrating how early leadership roles propelled Brother Johnson to greater depths and higher heights.

An examination of meeting minutes and official records from the Third District—which during the 1950s encompassed Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia—highlights Brother Johnson’s enduring impact from his undergraduate days to his tenure as District Representative and beyond.

1950: 36th Grand Conclave in Boston, Massachusetts

During the 36th Grand Conclave in Boston, District Representative Brother J. D. Gill delivered his Annual Report of the Third District to the assembled body. In his address, Brother Gill emphasized the essential goal of fostering unity across generations:

“It has been the desire of the District Representative to stimulate a stronger fraternal relationship between the graduates and undergraduates.”

In detailing efforts to bridge this gap, Brother Gill specifically commended Brother Vernon Johnson, noting that he did a “very fine job in presenting the undergraduate point of view.”

May 4, 1951: Third District Conference in Richmond, Virginia

On May 4, 1951, the Third District Conference convened its business session at the Y.M.C.A. Building in Richmond, Virginia.

According to the official minutes, the assembly received a formal report from Brother Vernon Johnson, who was serving as Second Vice District Representative and stepping in during the absence of First Vice District Representative Brother Reuben Lawson. Demonstrating initiative and leadership, Brother Johnson distributed physical copies of his report to the assembly, after which a motion passed to adopt the report and refer it to the proper committees.

December 31, 1973: A Lifetime of Dedication

Brother Johnson’s long-standing commitment to the organization is further reflected in official fraternity rosters. Documents dated as early as December 31, 1973, confirm that Brother Johnson had achieved Life Member status within Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., marking decades of continuous loyalty and devotion.

October 10, 1983: Championing Youth and Education

While serving as the 15th Third District Representative, Brother Johnson was a staunch advocate for ensuring that deserving youth received their designated academic awards.

In a letter dated October 10, 1983, to Brother Robert P. Reeder, National Executive Secretary, Brother Johnson directly addressed the concerns of the District. He urged the Supreme Council to render the appropriate scholarship funds to the Third District’s youth winners without delay, ensuring that the fraternity’s commitment to academic excellence was fully honored.
