Zeta Iota Paves Forward $9,000 in Scholarships
Portsmouth, VA. On May 5, 2022, the Zeta Iota Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., awarded nine $1000 scholarships to area graduating seniors. The chapter presented eight Brother Joseph N. Green Sr. Scholarship Awards and one Zeta Iota Chapter Award. The event’s purpose was to pave the way forward for a few deserving youths to continue their academic aspirations.
This year’s recipient of the Zeta Iota Scholarship was Mr. Marcus Lawton, son of Brother Michael Lawton and grandson of Brother Theophilus Lawton, from Grassfield Senior High School, Chesapeake, Virginia. He will be attending Morgan State University.
This year’s Brother Joseph N. Green Sr. Scholarship Awards recipients were DeVonte Melton and Janare Davis from I. C. Norcom Senior High School, Portsmouth, Virginia. Both will be attending Norfolk State University. Luis Morales, IV and Terrence Massenburg attend Churchland Senior High School. Luis will be attending Norfolk State University, and Terrence will be attending Virginia Commonwealth University. Thomas Patterson and Bryson Ruff attend Western Branch Senior High School, Chesapeake, Virginia. They will be attending Virginia State University. Keone Leao attends Hickory Senior High School and will be attending Virginia Tech University. Will Adewole attends Deep Creek Senior High School and will be attending the University of Virginia.
Brother Joseph Nathan Green Sr. was a native of Prince Edward County, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia State College, where he was initiated into the Nu Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. After graduation, he moved to Portsmouth, where he taught brick masonry and industrial arts. Brother Green was a founding member of the Zeta Iota Chapter, where he was the first Vice-Basileus of the chapter and served as Keeper of Records and Seals for 25 years.
