Greetings Brothers!

I think James Brown coined the term “you got to use what you got to get what you need.” – or something like that. If I’m correct in my recollection, I’m certain the inspiration for Brown’s lyric was in no way connected to this week’s Monday Pearl; nevertheless, his message was spot on.

In 1957, then former Grand Basileus Harry T. Penn leveraged his “gift” to go undercover throughout the South to better understand its views on desegregation. The attached account of his travels appeared in the September 1957 Oracle and I thought you might find it an interesting read. When I read the about his reaction to his stop in Mississippi, I recalled one of my favorite songs by Nina Simone titled, “Mississippi Goddam” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghhaREDM3X8). It appears Brother Penn, Nina, and I’m sure countless others had the same reaction.
