Re-Energizing The Monday Pearl: Honoring the Legacy of Brother Dr. Vernon Eugene Johnson (Part I)

As we re-energize The Monday Pearl, we are thrilled to begin a biweekly sharing of fraternity content, commentary, and research of historical value that we hope Brothers will enjoy and draw inspiration from.

There is no better place to start this journey than with the Brother credited as the author of the “Origin of the Current Third District”: Brother Dr. Vernon Eugene Johnson.

Note: For this submission, we will focus on Brother Dr. Johnson’s tenure in Omega as an undergraduate and his time spent as Basileus of the Lambda Omega Chapter. We will bring to light many other facts about this mighty man of Omega in future submissions.

The Foundation of a Leader

When viewing the Third District’s history section located on its official website, you will find the following subtitle and statement:

“A Concise History of the Third District”

“Dedicated to Brother Dr. Vernon E. Johnson who wrote the ‘Origin of the Current Third District,’ from which this history is adapted, and who served as the 15th Third District Representative from 1983–1986.”

Who was this mighty man of Omega?

Brother Vernon Eugene Johnson, Ed.D., was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on October 25, 1930. A proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk and Virginia State College (now Virginia State University) in Petersburg, Va. Brother Johnson went on to earn advanced graduate degrees from Old Dominion University (Norfolk), the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), and the College of William and Mary (Williamsburg).

While a student at Virginia State, Brother Johnson was initiated into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. through the Nu Psi Chapter in the spring of 1950. As a student and member of Nu Psi, his exceptional leadership skills were propelled to the forefront. He was selected to serve as Nu Psi Basileus and went on to serve as the 2nd Vice Third District Representative, elected to that position at the 18th Annual Third District meeting held at the Y.M.C.A. building in Richmond, Virginia, on May 4–5, 1951.

Service, Leadership, and Legacy

Following his graduation from Virginia State College, Brother Johnson entered the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant, ultimately retiring after 29 years of honorable service adorned with numerous awards and medals.

Upon retiring from the military, Brother Johnson immediately affiliated with the Lambda Omega Chapter. True to form, just as he had during his undergraduate days, his gifts of leadership and true friendship shone brightly as he worked tirelessly for Omega’s cause. His deep love for our beloved fraternity and his outstanding leadership qualities afforded him the privilege of serving as the Basileus of Lambda Omega from 1977 to 1980.

Key milestones during his tenure as Basileus include:

• The 25-Year Certificate: At the urging of Brother Garnette and under the administration of Brother Vernon Johnson, Lambda Omega recommended to the Grand Conclave the establishment of the 25-year certificate.

• Academic Standards: Under his leadership, Lambda Omega successfully lobbied at the Denver Conclave to restore the grade point average requirement to 2.5 for undergraduate admission into the fraternity.

And as previously noted, serving as the 15th Third District Representative (1983–1986), Brother Dr. Johnson cemented his enduring legacy by compiling and documenting the foundational history of our current district.
