Portsmouth, VA.  For the 2017-18 year, Zeta Iota’s Basileus Henry Mabry initiated “Boots On The Ground” initiative for the Omega’s Social Action Mandate. The chapters purpose will be getting involved in walking with the people in the community who need the chapters' help, not just talking, actually putting boots on the ground. The first phase of “Boots on the Ground” program , Zeta Iota chapter’s established a partnership with the American Red Cross in their nationwide campaign “Sound the Alarm” for the spring of 2018. This partnership was initiated by Brother Mabry and Brother Vincent Edwards, who is the National Director of Biomedical Services of the Red Cross. Sound the Alarm program is a series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events across the country. Red Cross volunteers, along with fire departments and other partners canvass at-risk neighborhoods, installing free smoke alarms, replacing batteries in existing alarms, and providing fire prevention and safety education.

But on October 24, 2017, a 59 year old man died in a trailer home fire in Virginia Beach. The Red Cross contacted Zeta Iota and asked if the chapter would volunteer to distribute and install smoke detectors at the Colonial Run Mobile Home Park in Virginia Beach. So on November 4, 2017, members of Zeta Iota, Red Cross volunteers and the Virginia Beach Fire Department visited the trailer park. Brothers went door to door, questioning residents about having smoke alarms and installing them.

Zeta Iota and the Red Cross will partner this spring for three other life sustaining events, Zeta Iota is putting “Boots On The Ground”
