Omega Men for Homeless Men (OMFHM) social action’s program started the summer off with a Bang! On July 10, 2017 the men of the Alpha Omega gathered at the Father McKenna Center, 900 North Capitol Street, NW, Washington, DC, in the basement of St. Aloysius Church at Gonzaga College High School at 11:00 a.m. This session featured three speakers from our growing community partner membership.
First up , Mr. Melvyn Smith the Homeless Services Outreach Coordinator of the D.C. Department of Human Services located at 64 New York Avenue Northeast , Washington DC. His discussion with the men involved understanding the process of getting affordable and adequate housing in the District of Columbia. The men were engaged and asked a multitude of questions about the various programs available to them.
Second, Bro. Steven Harper (Alpha Omega) who is a Veterans Employment Specialist, who focused on providing employment assistance to the homeless veterans in need of gainful employment. His organization has been awarded grants specifically geared to assist homeless veterans get trained or retrained to re-enter the workforce and earn a livable salary.
Lastly, Mr. Chaz Jenkins a representative of MedStar Family Choice who provided the men with information on getting registered and receiving health services through his organization. In addition, he informed them on some local upcoming events that will offer some free services (such as health screenings and haircuts) that they may qualify for as well.
OMFHM is pleased to have established these partnerships with such groups as MedStar Family Choice and the D.C. Department of Human Services. This allows OMFHM to facilitate and provide useful information in multitude of areas that will support the men during there next steps in re-entering mainstream society.
