SUFFOLK, VA— Saturday, May 5, 2018, The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Alpha Iota Chapter of Suffolk, Virginia conducted community service at the home of Brother Sylvester Jones (Omega Chapter).

The brothers of the Alpha Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., gathered at the home of our Omega Chapter Bro. Sylvester Jones and perform maintenance to the residence of his surviving widow, Ms. Margaret Jones. The services rendered consisted of washing her car, mowing the lawn, weed eating and pressure washing her windows. Ms. Jones was very thankful for the brothers of Alpha Iota Chapter coming out and showing that we cared.

In addition, upon completing Ms. Jones’ tasks, the brothers assembled at our Adopt-A-Spot located on the Corner of E. Washington St. and North 5th St. to keep Suffolk beautiful. On the corner is a historic marker that reads, “Here stood the Nansemond Collegiate Institute, founded in 1890 as the Nansemond Industrial Institute by Rev. William W. Gaines to provide local black children with an education, because free public schools were closed to them. Eventually the institute offered elementary, secondary, and normal school courses of instruction. In 1927 a public school for black students was opened; competition for students and a series of disastrous fires forced the institute to close in 1939.” Alpha Iota Chapter takes pride in keeping the spot and plot presentable.

Social Action Programs are mandated by the fraternity. Chapters participate in activities that will uplift their communities. Some of the activities include: voter registration, Assault on Illiteracy; Habitat for Humanity; mentoring; and participation in fundraisers for charitable organizations.
